Today, the Scottish Young Greens released their first ever Youth Manifesto at their AGM. This 12-page document takes the policies most relevant to young people contained in the Scottish Green Party’s manifesto for the upcoming general election in an accessible form.

Some of these policies include:

  • Investment in social housing, removal of tax relief on buy-to-let properties, and introduction of secure tenancies and rent controls to ensure housing is affordable
  • Oppose any moves to reduce benefits available to young people under the age of 25
  • Support maintaining free university tuition in Scotland and ending tuition fees in England and Wales, and reinstate the post-study work visa, to allow students who study at UK universities to stay and use their education in Britain
  • Retain the Human Rights Act, introduce a Digital Bill of Rights to protect net neutrality and online privacy, and ensure prejudice based on race, skin colour, gender, sexuality, religion, national origin, social origin or any other factor has no place in our society

The Youth Manifesto also contains profiles of the Westminster candidates who are members of Scottish Young Greens: Bright Green’s own Sarah Beattie-Smith (standing in Edinburgh North and Leith), Lewis Campbell (Dunfermline and West Fife), Ross Greer (East Dunbartonshire), Zara Kitson (Glasgow North East), Kim Long (Glasgow East), James Macessach-Leitch (Moray), and Ryan Morrison (Paisley and Renfrewshire North).

A statement on the Scottish Young Greens’ website stated that ‘We hope this is the first of many such manifestos the Scottish Young Greens will publish over the years, as we strive to ensure that the voice of Scotland’s youth is heard in our political sphere, and as we push for a society that truly meets our tagline – a society that values Equality, Democracy and Environment.’
