Greens must prioritise the global nature of the climate emergency
The Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW), and its sister parties across the world have much to contend with. They must seek to challenge injustice and inequality in all its forms and to offer an alternative to stale parties of the centre, and to insurgent parties of the far right. However, their first duty is to sound the alarm bell about the Global Climate and Ecological Emergency, which is the defining issue of our time.
Greens recognise the global nature of the threat and the need for international co-operation in response to it. The Global Greens, made up of parties from over 100 countries, are uniquely placed to initiate an international campaign for effective political action. It would be appropriate if the GPEW, the Green Party of the world’s oldest industrial polluter, took a lead in this.
I would regard my election as International Co-ordinator as a mandate for arguing for this on GPEX and across the party, particularly if it was supported by Conference passing my policy motion.
