Bright Green is a rapidly growing and changing organisation, focused on providing independent media for a radical, grassroots green movement. Since relaunching in January 2019, we have built a team of writers who are writing regular content for us, contributing to some of the biggest debates in the UK’s Green Parties, Labour movement and social movements. All of our team are currently volunteers.

Now we’re looking to grow the team once more. We’re currently recruiting for the following roles:

Operations and Web Manager

Since relaunching in January 2019, Bright Green has grown from strength to strength. Now we’re looking to expand further and make Bright Green bigger and better than ever. In pursuit of this, we’re looking for a talented Operations and Web Manager.

We’re looking for somebody to undertake a major review of Bright Green’s infrastructure and operations – including our website, brand, fundraising initiatives, legal status and organisational processes. You’ll be leading on bringing Bright Green into the future, building a reader-friendly and accessible website, opening up new communications channels, ensuring the long term sustainability of the publication, and helping to build a diverse, empowered and collaborative team.

We are looking for people with the following attributes:

  • Experience in web development and design.
  • Practical understanding of WordPress.
  • An eye for design and some competence using design software.
  • Experience in delivering digital fundraising campaigns.
  • A strategic mind and/or experience of designing or implementing organisational strategies.
  • A knack for processes and logistics.
  • A broad commitment to the values described in Bright Green’s manifesto.

We understand that we are looking for a varied skill set in this role. As such, this may be filled by more than one person. So, if you’re experienced in web development, but don’t have much background in organisational management, we’d still strongly encourage you to apply.

To apply, please send the following to front-desk@project1-hvznj9e2s8.live-website.com:

  • A statement explaining how you meet the criteria described above, why you want to join our team, and what excites you about Bright Green. This should be no longer than two sides of A4.

We will review applications as we receive them, and will get back to successful applicants quickly. Therefore, make sure you apply early, as our vacancies may become filled.

We are keen to receive applications from people who define as women, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and/or black and minority ethnic.

Green Parties editor

Currently our most vibrant and active section – Green Parties is all about covering the work and debates in Green Parties in the UK and across the globe. Since our relaunch we’ve published dozens of articles on Green Parties worldwide – from England and Wales to Poland and from Scotland to the Netherlands. We’ve covered internal Green Party selections for the London Assembly, Mayoral and potential European Parliament elections. High profile figures – including Sian Berry and Caroline Russell – have written for us. And we’ve run a weekly UK Green news column updating the world about the most important Green news stories.

Now we want to build on that, by sourcing more content, reaching new audiences and contributing to wider debates. As editor of the Green Parties section you’ll be responsible for just that. The role will include:

  • Proactively sourcing content for the section from external contributors.
  • Being the primary editor for our writers in the Green Parties section.
  • Being a secondary editor for the news section, when relevant and as needed.
  • Contributing to organisational strategy and overall editorial direction, in collaboration with the Editor in Chief.
  • Writing op-eds on key debates within Green Parties.

To fulfill these duties, we are looking for somebody with the following qualities:

  • An understanding of Green politics – crucially in relation to the Green Party of England and Wales, Scottish Green Party and Green Party in Northern Ireland.
  • A strong attention to detail, with an aptitude for fact checking and picking up grammar and spelling errors.
  • A fluid writing style.
  • Self motivation.
  • An ability to work on own initiative.
  • Experience of online journalism, and an understanding of what makes a good story, how to use headlines and images to draw in and readers.
  • An ability to work collaboratively, and in a supportive manner.
  • Experience in proof reading and copy editing other people’s work.
  • A broad commitment to the values described in Bright Green’s manifesto.

  • Links or attachments to three pieces of written work, preferably intended for different audiences.

We will review applications as we receive them, and will get back to successful applicants quickly. Therefore, make sure you apply early, as our vacancies may become filled.

Labour Movements editor

When Bright Green was relaunched in January 2019, we took a decision to increase our focus on the UK’s labour movement, and labour movements across the glove. This means we have increased our coverage of internal discussions in the UK Labour Party, as well as being an outlet with an eye on international workers’ struggles.

  • Proactively sourcing content for the section from external contributors.

  • Being a secondary editor for the news section, when relevant and as needed.

  • A fluid writing style.
  • Self motivation.
  • An ability to work on own initiative.

Social Movements editor

Over the last decade, social movements have changed political discourse, debate and policy. The international fossil fuel divestment movement has shifted attitudes towards the financing of fossil fuels. The anti-austerity movement in the UK has turned the tide on the popularity of government cuts and privatisation. The youth climate strikes have placed climate change at the top of political and media agendas.

But social movements are facing new challenges, and operating in different ways. As editor of the Social Movements section you’ll be responsible for sourcing content that looks at how social movements respond to these challenges and build resilience for long term change. The role will include:

  • Proactively sourcing content for the section from external contributors.
  • Being the primary editor for our writers in the Social Movements section.
  • Being a secondary editor for the news section, when relevant and as needed.
  • Contributing to organisational strategy and overall editorial direction, in collaboration with the Editor in Chief.
  • Writing op-eds on key debates within labour movements.

To fulfill these duties, we are looking for somebody with the following qualities:

  • An understanding of social movements currently active in the UK and across the globe.

While Bright Green maintains close connections with the UK’s Green Parties, we are not exclusively looking for writers who are members or supporters of any Green Party. We warmly encourage applicants from other political traditions and backgrounds.
