Green Party leadership candidates declared
The full list of candidates for the roles of leader and deputy leader of the Green Party of England and Wales have been released.
For leader, the candidates are: Caroline Lucas and Jonathon Bartley (jobshare), Simon Cross, Clive Lord, David Malone, Martie Warin and David Williams.
For deputy leader, the candidates are: Shahrar Ali, Katharina Boettge, Alan Borgars, Andrew Cooper, Storm Poorun, Daniella Radice and Amelia Womack.
If Caroline Lucas and Jonathon Bartley are elected, there will only be one deputy leader, and they will be allowed to be of any gender.
If any of the single candidates for leader are successful, the two deputy leaders will be of different genders.
Nominations are now closed and the campaign period will last until 24 July after which a one month balloting period will begin with the results announced at the Autumn Conference in Birmingham on 2 September.
Over the coming months, Bright Green will be reporting from hustings and interviewing and profiling as many candidates as possible so like us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date.
I support David Malones candidacy for leader , it strickes me that his election offers a good compromise of the New and the Old Staus quo potentially as where a Single Leader instead of Co Leaders is chosen then Two deputies are elected under the parties leadership system.
Caroline has a huge job as an MP in Westminster and of course Natalies leadership in the 2015 Election with Carolines Stirling Westminster Club prescence gave an excellent pincer effect in dealing with media both from Outsider and insider perspectives , we must be cognisant of the fact that the electorate is sick to death of the westminster club insider perspective as it is with the Washington Beltway perspective in the states.
With a General election a high likliehood following Brexit I would venture that a leadership of 1 plus 2 is more effective in utilisation of political capital resources of the Green Party of England and wales than a 2 plus one approach, which could see Amelia not in the joint deputy role and could see Caroline being asked to do what is an impossible task with even her undoubted talents.
Of course the question for the Caroline/Jonathan 2 plus 1 leadership is who Caroline endourses for deputy leader Amelia or Shahrar. For my money Amelia and Sharar make a perfectly sensible combination where the sum of the whole is greater than the parts.

A Green Party spokesperson commented:
“The Green Party’s membership and supporters are the lifeblood of the Party. Members are at the heart of all of the Party’s decision-making, from Conference and beyond, and these are their elections, elections in which they will decide who comprises the Leadership team for the next two years.”
Speaking on her decision not to re-stand, Natalie said:
“It’s been a privilege and an honour to have the title ‘leader of the Green Party’, but every member of the Green Party is a leader, helping to lead the way towards a society in which we live within our environmental limits while ensuring no one fears hunger or want.”
The party has elections every two years for Leader and Deputy Leader roles. This will be the fifth election since the party decided to switch from having principal speakers to having a leader and two deputy leaders, or co-leaders and one deputy leader.

really dissapointed shahrar ali did nt run for leader. i think he the best public face for the greens right now natalie decided to leave.
I am supporting Clive Loyd, who joined the embryonic Green Party in 1973, five months after it’s formation. Now eighty he is the longest serving member still active. He was a major contributor to the party’s first ‘manifesto for a sustainable society’ drafting the section highlighting the crucial link between social justice and preserving our planets life support systems.
For the past 40 years he has been consistently advocating citizens basic income as having an important role in a fair system.
Caroline Lucas yes and Jonathon Bartley would make a good team and Storm Poorun
David Malone seems to me the most capable of achieving change out of the candidates. I do hope however, all are given opportunity to present their case.
This is a possible problem. For elections for GP posts I have felt unable to vote because I knew nothing about the people standing, could find little online and heard nothing. It doesn’t fit with our claims to be democratic if members are left ignorant of the qualifications of its candidates. Please can we have adequate information, debates online, opportunity to send questions well before 24th July.
I agree for the reasons I made earlier. Brieflyit strickes me that his election offers a good compromise of the New and the Old Staus quo potentially as where a Single Leader instead of Co Leaders is chosen then Two deputies are elected under the parties leadership system.

Please don’t use the term ‘non-male’ to refer to women or people who are Transgender, Intersex etc as it is degrading.
100% agree with this! Why as a party are we using this term?! I know people who have left over this!
Sorry Jammy. That was a mistake which has now been corrected. Thanks for pointing it out.
A summary on where each of the candidates now stand in terms of Britain’s membership of the EU and what the way forward should be in the light of the referendum would be useful (and might make an illuminating Bright Green piece).
Male and non-male? I thought this ridiculous form of categorisation had been dispensed with.
Sorry Sue. This was a mistake that has now been corrected. Thanks for pointing it out.
Caroline Lucas, without a doubt!
