Parliamentary debate scheduled after caged animals petition hits 100k signatures
Over 100,000 people have signed a petition calling for a ban on using cages and crates for farmed animals, leading to a parliamentary debate in the House of Commons.
The petition calls for the government to ban cages and crates for laying hens, other birds and sows. It also calls for a ban on individual calf pens.
A debate on the petition is now scheduled to take place on 16 June.
The government has also responded to the petition saying: “This Government was elected on a mandate to introduce the most ambitious plans to improve animal welfare in a generation. The use of cages and crates is an issue we are now considering very carefully.”
