While I was first becoming interested in a serious way in politics there were lots of interesting things happening. I was very interested in the peace process in the north of Ireland. But one thing that really caught my attention was rail privatisation. And the man who I read almost daily on this was Christian Wolmar. I’m delighted that he’s coming to Edinburgh today to talk at the first Greenlight event. He’ll be joined by Scottish transport expert David Spaven.

Rail privatisation has, of course, been one of the most gratuitous failures of John Major’s government. An utter triumph of ideology over interest in the delivery of service to the public.

Following the great news that Green MP Caroline Lucas has introduced a bill to renationalise the railways, it will be interesting to see what Wolmar has to say. As a possible future Mayor of London it will also be interesting to hear his ideas for running a global city.

Come along! Wednesday 26th June, 7pm, Summerhall Dissection Room, Free – no booking required.
