A photo of Green Party campaigners in Bristol

In a recent article for Left Foot Forward, I took a look at the constituencies where YouGov’s recent MRP poll indicated the Green Party is currently on track to perform best at the next election. But who are the candidates in each of these seats?

The ten seats that the YouGov MRP poll suggests the Greens will perform best are:

  1. Brighton Pavilion
  2. Bristol Central
  3. Dulwich and West Norwood
  4. Hackney North and Stoke Newington
  5. Hackney South and Shoreditch
  6. Sheffield Central
  7. Holborn and St Pancras
  8. Manchester Rusholme
  9. Waveney Valley
  10. Bristol South

Who is the Green Party candidate for Brighton Pavilion?

Brighton Pavilion is, of course, the only seat the Greens currently hold. Caroline Lucas has represented it in parliament since 2010. At the next election, she’s standing down. The Green Party’s candidate next time will be Siân Berry – who was co-leader of the Greens from 2018-2021 and has been a London Assembly member since 2016. She was also the Green Party candidate for London Mayor in 2008, 2016 and 2021.

Who is the Green Party candidate for Bristol Central?

Bristol has been a hotbed of Green Party activity for some time. The Greens have had major success in local elections, and since 2015, it has played host to the Green Party’s best hope of getting a second MP elected. The party’s co-leader Carla Denyer is the Green candidate for the new constituency of Bristol Central at the next election. She’s been a councillor in Bristol and stood in the old Bristol West constituency in 2019. According to YouGov’s MRP, the Greens are currently just 4 points behind Labour in the new seat.

Who is the Green Party candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood?

In the 2019 general election, the Greens fielded their then co-leader Jonathan Bartley in Dulwich and West Norwood. He came second, picking up 16.5 per cent of the vote. This time around, Pete Elliott will be standing for the Green Party. Elliott previously served as a councillor on Lambeth Borough Council.

Who is the Green Party candidate for Hackney North and Stoke Newington?

Hackney North and Stoke Newington has been held by Labour’s Dianne Abbott since 1987. It’s also long been a constituency which has returned one of the highest Green vote shares in the country. Antoinette Fernandez has been selected to contest the seat for the Greens at the next election. She’s also standing in the North East Constituency in May’s elections to the London Assembly.

Who is the Green Party candidate for Hackney South and Shoreditch?

The neighbouring constituency to Hackney North is Hackney South and Shoreditch. The Green Party has selected Chesca Walton for the constituency. Walton was elected co-chair of Green Party Women in 2023.

Who is the Green Party candidate for Sheffield Central?

Like other constituencies on this list, Sheffield Central has been a place the Greens have performed well for some time. Alison Teal stood for the Greens at the 2019 general election, and she was initially selected to fight the seat again. However, she has since been suspended from the party. The Greens are yet to select another candidate to contest the seat.

Who is the Green Party candidate for Holborn and St Pancras?

Holborn and St Pancras is currently the seat held by the Labour Party leader Keir Starmer. In 2015, the Greens picked up more than 12% of the vote in the seat. At the next election David Stansell will be contesting the constituency for the Green Party. Stansell is the chair of Camden Green Party.

Who is the Green Party candidate for Manchester Rusholme?

Manchester Rusholme is a new parliamentary constituency. The new seat includes elements of the old Manchester Central and Manchester Gorton constituencies, the latter of which is set to be abolished. The Green Party is yet to confirm who its candidate for the new constituency will be.

Who is the Green Party candidate for Waveney Valley?

Waveney Valley is another new constituency. The Greens have publicly indicated that it is one of their top target seats in the next general election. In the May 2023 local elections, the Green Party won an overall majority on Mid Suffolk Council, part of which covers the Waveney Valley constituency, suggesting their is a strong groundswell of support on the ground in the seat. The Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay has been selected to fight the seat for the Greens.

Who is the Green Party candidate for Bristol South?

A second Bristol constituency finishes YouGov’s list. Historically, Bristol South has returned one of the higher Green vote shares in the country, but below its neighbour Bristol West (much of which will be in the new Bristol Central seat). Jai Breitnauer has been selected to contest Bristol South at the next general election.
