The Green Party has become the largest party on Lancaster Council after winning a seat from Labour in a by-election.

In the Scotforth East by-election on Thursday 3 October, the Greens’ Andrew Otway picked up 57.8% of the vote to Labour’s 22.4%. As a result, there are now 23 Green Councillors on Lancaster Council, with Labour the second largest group on 21.

This is the first time the Greens have been the largest party on the council. It also makes the Green Group on Lancaster Councillor the joint-second largest anywhere in the country. Only Bristol City Council has more Greens elected to it.

Speaking on his election, Otway said: “Thank you to everyone who campaigned, voted Green or took the time to chat to us about local issues. I have lots of ideas & casework to follow up, & am looking forward to making a difference as one of the councillors for this lovely, friendly part of Lancaster.”
