Ellie Chowns replaces Carne Ross as Green Party global solidarity spokesperson
Carne Ross has stepped down as the Green Party of England and Wales’ global solidarity spokesperson. He is being replaced in the role by the Green MP for North Herefordshire Ellie Chowns.
Announcing his decision to step down, Ross said: “It has been my honour to serve in this role”, and thanked a number of groups and individuals within the party for working with him, including both Jewish Greens and Muslim Greens.
Ross became more prominent as a spokesperson in the last 12 months, with him having to lead on the Greens’ response to the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023, and Israel’s subsequent assault on Gaza.
Ross acknowledged this in his comments announcing his departure from the role. He said: “The Greens were the first party to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, and the first (by a long way) to call out the clear evidence of war crimes. It is deeply regrettable that our major parties have been so slow and ambivalent in doing so. When it comes to protecting civilians and upholding the laws of war, we must all speak out without fear or favour.”
