More than 30,000 people have signed a petition calling for the UK government to introduce a path for Ukrainians to obtain settled status in the UK.

The petition reads: “We urge the UK government to provide a path to settlement for Ukrainians living in the UK. These individuals face significant uncertainty about their future. We think allowing them to settle would provide the stability needed to rebuild their lives and contribute to British society.”

The petition is hosted on the official parliamentary petitions website. As such, because it has received more than 10,000 signatures it has received a formal response from the government.

Responding to the petition, the government said: “We recognise the Ukrainian government’s desire for the return of their citizens to help rebuild Ukraine when it is safe to do so. This is why the temporary Ukraine schemes do not lead to settlement.”

Were the petition to reach 100,000 signatures it would be considered for a debate in the House of Commons.

The petition had reached 35, 810 signatures at the time of writing.
